Today marks one year (twelve months) since we moved to Nevada from Indianapolis. It was one year ago today that we saw our condo we were buying for the first time, and we ate at Violette’s Vegan (RIP) so many times that first week. It was hot when we arrived, and only getting hotter, but we were so excited to be here. We were without most furniture, so we went on many trips to IKEA.

There are so many lessons the desert has taught us this past year. We have fallen in love with our desert life — we have discovered so many hikes and restaurants we love too! I am sure I am forgetting so much, but here are twelve that have vivid memories attached.

  1. Invest in eye drops and a humidifier.
  2. When it rains, wait a bit before you try going hiking out in the mountains. Wait even longer to go rock climbing.
  3. Hummingbirds love the desert.
  4. No mosquitos!
  5. No more hours of sticky clothes/face/back due to sweat that does not evaporate.
  6. Protect yourself from the sun.
  7. Fill up your gas before leaving Nevada when you drive to Joshua Tree.
  8. Leaves still change into beautiful colors in the fall.
  9. There are plenty of natural springs that have water year-round.
  10. Bring an extra blanket when you go camping, because it can get cooler than you expect.
  11. Working east coast hours has its perks (finishing work at 2pm)
  12. Get a Southwest credit card/companion pass, because, there are direct flights to Hawaii.
