Ever since we bought a brand new mirrorless camera (the Sony a7 vi *affiliate link), we have been obsessed with learning stop motion photography. We find inspiration from everywhere, and we practice making stop motion videos all of the time!
If you, too, have caught the stop motion bug here are the three most helpful tips to make them the best!
Consistent Lighting
When you are shooting stop motions, it is wild to see flickers between images that show up when you are indoors and rely on sunlight. When you’re outside, it seems like overcast days or extremely sunny days have given us the best results. At the end of the day, I don’t mind a slight flicker on outdoor videos, because that’s a piece of the reality!
Sturdy Tripod/C-Stand (stable camera shot)
Equally wild, it is very easy to spot when a camera moves even the slightest between frames of a stop motion. A sturdy tripod/c-stand and a remote clicker both help remove any blunders from this area.
Write out a shot list
Nothing feels worse when you finish up taking all of your photos only to realize you forgot to shoot a sequence that you need for your final production.
